How I Got Two Years of Masterclass For Free
This past Christmas, I realized three things at once: I’m lucky to have such good friends and clients, MasterClass ran a good holiday deal, and, clearly, I’m known for loving to learn among those who matter to me.
How did I realize this? The answer is simple: Two different people, who know me from very different parts of my life, gave me year-long memberships to MasterClass (thank you!), the online learning and seminar platform/streaming service. While this was hilarious, it also overjoyed me. They knew I would get a lot out of the courses and truly enjoy my experience there.
So far, I’ve learned about startups from Alexis Ohanian, styling from Karla Welch, wine from James Suckling, and bread from Appolonia Polaine. Just to name a few.
This was exciting to me on a personal level in that I could expand my culinary skills. Beyond that, it allowed me to continue to keep my promise that I make to clients (or potential clients) every time I send a proposal:
“...Plus, we get to learn together. I'm constantly changing and growing: adding new services and staying on top of trends and platforms over time to bring you the most up-to-date advice and information.”
This is one of the key points I try to make to clients, and what any good marketer should be standing on: the landscape of digital marketing is constantly shifting and changing underneath our feet. It is my job and responsibility to stay as up-to-date as possible as that happens. Continuous learning in both a professional and personal capacity is imperative.
I often come to client meetings saying, “I just read X or heard Y and I think we can apply it to what we are doing.” I take it as a point of pride that my clients will know I’m always thinking about how to bring them the best by expanding my own horizons.
So when I get asked things like, “What is your overall marketing philosophy?” My answer is simple: There is no way to hack yourself to success. Take what you know to optimize what you are doing, but nothing beats good work. I learn so I can do the optimizing piece, and you can focus on growing your business and doing your absolute best work.
I enjoy learning, but I also take it as a challenge. I’m a subject matter expert in some places, but I don’t know everything. I want to challenge myself to find the things I don’t know and understand them better.
I’ve put this out there so strongly that now, the people in my life know that it gives me joy, and they help me along the way. I only hope that you can be known for something that brings you joy and makes you better the way I have.
Lesson Learned: Put out the call, and the world will answer. Being known for what you love allows you to continue to grow into your best self.
